New York Ayrshire Youth had Tremendous Year!

Members of the New York Junior Ayrshire Club had a tremendous
year in 2012 as the traveled around the United States expressing their talents
and exhibiting their Registered Ayrshire cattle. The group is made up of youth under the
age of 21 who either own or are enthusiastic about the Ayrshire breed. “Our youth are dedicated,
successful, knowledgeable and hard working individuals that make an awesome
team. We are very proud of our Ayrshire youth in New York”said Diana Curtis, NY
Ayrshire Club Youth Director. “The
Ayrshire youth has been extremely busy this past year and they have the success
that proves that,” she added.
New York Ayrshire Princess
Serving as our 2012-2013 New York Ayrshire Princess is Katleyn
Walley. Walley is from Walton, New
York and is currently a junior at Cornell University.
She has done a tremendous job representing our state’s Ayrshire Breeders
this past year.
Annual Meeting
During the 2012 annual meeting of the New York Ayrshire Club the
junior members met to plan their year. Production awards were also given
out during that meeting. The New York Ayrshire Club recognized the following
youth for owning registered Ayrshire with the highest production records in
their respective age categories.
The requirements are as follows; only official DHI records are
recognized, and animals must be owned be the individual at the start of the record.

New York Spring Carousel
The group was in full swing at the New York Spring Dairy Carousel where members: Matthew Sweeney, Appleton, NY; Colton Davis, Dalton, NY; Sara Pulver, Fort Edwards, NY; Katelyn Walley, Walton, NY ; Xavier Altmeter, Arcade, NY; Zach Altmeter, Arcade, NY and Erin Curtis Szalach, Cazenovia, NY worked taking care of the sale animals and leading for the New York Spring Ayrshire Sale.
Many members also exhibited in the New York Spring Ayrshire Show. Shelby Coon of Vernon, NY took Junior
Champion of the Junior Show with her newly purchased Winter Yearling; Either-Acres Modem Pristem.
National Convention
Erin Curtis Szalach, Christopher Sweeney, Appleton, NY ; Tylor McCaulley, Cazenovia, NY; and Xavier Altmeter traveled to represent New York Ayrshire Breeders to the National Ayrshire Convention held in June in
Appleton, Wisconsin. During their time at the convention they participated in Dairy Bowl and Dairy
Jeopardy. Christopher Sweeney came out victorious by placing first in the junior division of Dairy
Jeopardy. Erin Curtis Szalach, Cazenovia, NY, placed second in the junior division of the National Youth Book
Contest and also received two first place photographs in the photo contest. Tylor McCaulley, Manlius, NY, was awarded the Excellent Cow award owning cows that are scored Excellent with a classification score of 90 points or above. McCaulley also received two first
places with his photographs and was named the overall photo contest winner of
the contest. Xavier Altmeter placed second in the senior division of the National Youth Book and went on to compete
in the Outstanding Youth Contest. Zachery Altmeter and Kayla McCaulley, Cazenovia, NY also participated in
the photo contests. The junior members also participating in other youth activities and was able to tour
such farms as; Milk Source; Grand-View Ayrshires and Ulm-Star Ayrshires during the convention.
New York State Fair
The New York State Fair provides many opportunities for
our Ayrshire youth. Not only are they able to bring their finest cattle to exhibit but they are able to form
friendships that last a life time. The New York State Fair Youth Show was once again a
strong show with great quality animals exhibited by junior Ayrshire members from across New York State.
Champions of the show were awarded as follows;
Junior Champion, Pargon-Acres Rality Kendall (winter calf), Adam
Buckenmeyer, Alexander, NY; Reserve Junior Champion, Cedarcut Burdette Clove Colata, (winter calf),
Erin Curtis Szalach, Cazenovia, NY; Senior and Grand Champion, FiDe Hercules
Sugar Plum, (Jr. 2-year-Old), Paige DeMun, Troupsburg, NY; Reserve Senior and
Reserve Grand Champion; Cedarcut Jackson Elf Eliza, (Sr. 2-Year-Old), Kayla
McCaulley, Cazenovia, NY.
During the showmanship contest Adam Buckenmeyer of Wyoming County was named Master Showman of the
Ayrshire Breed with Paige DeMun of Steuben County receiving Reserve Master
Showman.
During the state fair the Ayrshire youth sold T-Shirts to help support their year-long
activities. The New York Ayrshire Club sponsors a Little Britches showmanship contest that the junior
members take an active roll in. This year’s judge was junior member Matthew Sweeney of Appleton, NY. Members also helped assist the showman during the contest.
All-American Dairy Show, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Seven Ayrshire youth; Erin Curtis Szalach,; Kayla
McCaulley; Tylor McCaulley; Adam Buckenmeyer; Lucas Walley, Walton,
NY; Brennan Lester, Burlington Flats, NY; and Haley Groat, also of Burlington
Flats, NY traveled to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and exhibited their animals at the All-American Dairy Shows both in
the open and junior shows. For the Ayrshire breed these two shows are their Mid-Atlantic National Shows. Adam Buckenmeyer received Reserve Junior Champion with his Winter Calf, Pargon-Acres Reality Kendall during the
Mid-Atlantic Junior Show while Erin Curtis Szalach placed first with her Winter
Calf, Cedarcut Burdette Clove Colata in the Mid-Atlantic Open Show.
“The qualities of these two shows were extreme and all of exhibitors from
New York did exceptional” said Curtis.
World Dairy Expo, Madison, Wisconsin
Three New York Ayrshire youth; Erin Curtis
Szalach, Adam Buckenmeyer, and Colton Davis, went on to exhibit at the World
Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin where they all placed in the top five of their
respective classes. Buckenmeyer went on to be chosen Junior Champion of the Junior Ayrshire Show with his winter
calf.
